The objective was to test new indicators of energy efficiency that would more accurately reflect a building's overall energy efficiency and permit better comparisons among buildings. The testing was conducted on field data from houses located throughout the world. The results are useful for those countries developing energy rating systems or evaluating the overall performance of energy conservation programs. At the same time, the study aimed to help these groups determine what information responsible authorities should collect.
This project was originally known as "Northern Homes", although the re-structuring of this project is now useful to IEA countries in milder climates but those homes still have a significant need for space heating.
The original formulation of this project "Northern Homes" involved Canada, Finland, Japan, Norway, Sweden, and the United States of America. Germany has also made a significant staff contribution.
